Cougars Claw Jaguars to Record Victory

Beeville, Tx-  Monday, March 1st, the Coastal Bend College Women's Basketball team found a way to win their first win of the season. After trailing by 17 points at halftime, the Cougars slowly but surely trimmed the deficit. 

The team started fast and hot when sophomore Brianna Martinez scored a three on an assist from Asia Wheeler on the first possession.  The team never looked back in the first quarter and played well gaining a 19-14 at the end of the first quarter.   

During the Second quarter, the Cougars could not find the basket and struggled protecting the basketball.  The team only scored seven points and found themselves in a hole, going into halftime down 26-43.

Head Coach, Nathan Purswell at halftime: "Jacksonville did everything right and we could not defend nor score in the second quarter. " 

To begin the second half,  the Cougars were able to propel themselves back into the game after they scored 31 points. CBC buckled down on defense as their press would force Jacksonville to turn the ball over.  The Cougars also hitting four, three pointers on four assists during the period.  The Jaguar lead was knocked down from 17 to six heading into the Fourth quarter, 63-57. 

The Fourth quarter the Cougars maintained their scoring by producing 22 points by spreading the basketball around.  The Cougars executed and played well down the stretch to finish with the 79-75 victory.  Coastal Bend outscored Jacksonville by 10 point,  22-12 in the final period as the Cougars went on to win the game. 

"This was the definition of a team victory, everyone played solid minutes and played well", Coach Purswell says.  "We had four in double figures, we had three with six plus rebounds, we had 28 made field goals on 22 assists, and we had 17 steals.  We put together three of our best quarters as a team all year", Coach Purswell added.

"I am so proud of these young ladies and how much they have improved and worked together as a team to earn this win.", Coach Purswell said.

 Coastal Bend Forward, Miranda Lamb lead the team in scoring with 19 points while recording five rebounds, three steals, two assists on the game. Cougar Guard, Savanna Smith netted 14 points and added two assists, two steals to her stat line. Freshman Guard, Ari Gallardo rattled in 11 points for CBC off the bench. Sophomore Guard,  Brianna Martinez tallied 10 points, four assists, three steals for the contest. Freshman Point Guard, Asia Wheeler produced a game high, eight assists, with six points, six rebounds, and two steals for the Cougars in the victory. 

The Cougars move to 1-7 on the year while holding a 1-3 Region XIV Conference record. CBC Women's Hoops will be back in action at the Peter S. Marecek Physical Fitness Center as they host #20 Blinn College for a conference game. Game time is set for 5:30 PM.
