CBC Women’s Basketball Earns Their First Win of The Season at The South Plains Classic

Levelland, Tx-  Coastal Bend Women's Basketball began their season at the South Plains Classic this past weekend.  The Cougars dropped the first two games but found a way to win on day three of the classic.

The classic started by facing the host team, number seven, South Plains College. The Lady Texans were able to get off to a hot start and handed the Cougars their first loss of the season, 47-95.

"There were bright spots during the game for us but ultimately some of the same issues that hindered us. The lack of not identifying shooters,  no offensive rebounds, and lack of communication defensively hurt us."  Said Coach Purswell.

The Cougars were led by sophomore Savanna Smith with 14 points and freshman Sincere Roberts with 10 points.

On Friday, day two of the South Plains Classic, Coastal Bend faced Otero Junior College.  The Cougars competed and fought hard against a talented Otero team, but fell 79-62. The Rattlers advanced to the National Tournament last year.  "We found a way to score more points and play better but still had some scoring slumps."  Said Coach Purswell

Leading scorers were sophomore Savanna Smith with 16 and sophomore Kavin Johnson with 12 points.

On the third day of the classic the Cougars clawed their way to victory. Coastal Bend surmounted an 11 point deficit at halftime, willing their first win of the young season.

"We really fought and I am super proud of the entire team for contributing to this win.  We have really improved every time we step on the court.  I'm just very proud of the level at which the team stepped up and played."  Coach Purswell said.

The team started slow and got down 13-23 at the end of one.  The second quarter was more of the same but CBC made a few more stops defensively. The Cougars were down 25-36 at halftime.

During the third quarter Coastal Bend found a way to trim the deficit by pressing the floor which forced Connors State into turnovers.  The Cougars won the third quarter, by outscoring the Cowgirls, 23-17.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Coastal Bend now trailed Connors State, 48-53.  Down by five the Cougars jumped out quickly with some hot shooting and finished the fourth quarter on a 21-10 run. CBC won the game, by a final score of 69-63. The victory marks Coach Purswell's earliest win to begin a season during his tenure at Coastal Bend.

Leading scorers were sophomore Savanna Smith with 16, sophomore Asia Wheeler with 16, and sophomore Kavin Johnson with 15.

"Leaving the classic we knew the number seven team South Plains would be tough and then Otero was going to be another strong team.  Connors State lead number seven South Plains at the end of one so another strong team on Saturday.  The girls just fought and clawed all weekend.  They found a way to beat a tough team and compete with another hard team.  I am extremely proud of the teams commitment and work to get that W."

Coastal Bend Women's Basketball will be back on the harwood this coming Saturday, November 13th as they host McLennan Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM
