Slow Start Stops Cougars in Their Tracks

Beeville, Tx-  Coastal Bend Women's basketball hosted the McLennan Community College Highlassies on Saturday, November 13th for a regular season matchup. The Cougars fresh off a victory over Connors State College at the South Plains Classic, aimed to stay in the win column versus the Highlassies for their home opener. 

CBC began the contest with a lackluster performance out the gate with poor shooting and a deficiency for rebounding in first quarter, trailing MCC 11-20.  Coastal Bend saw a 26 point outburst including a half court buzzer beater by Asia Wheeler, but the Cougars failed to stop McLennan who scored 29 points in the second quarter.  CBC trailed at halftime, 37-49.

 
The Cougars held the Highlassies to five points in the third period while making a run and cut the deficit to two points, outscoring MCC, 15-5 in the frame. Heading into the fourth quarter, CBC trailed 54-52.
 
McLennan would finish the Cougars outing with free throws down the stretch. The Highlassies bested CBC by a final score of 69-78.
 
"We have to figure out a way to score in the first quarter.  Slow starts are hurting us.  This team will not quit fighting and shows so much grit.  We have fought back from double digits three times this year, we just have to find a way to start."  Coach Purswell says.
 
Coastal Bend Guard, Savanna Smith had a game high 23 points while going 8-8 at the charity stripe. Smith also had a game high in Steals with four. Kavin Johnson contributed 12 points and five rebounds for the game. The Cougars recieved a boost from the bench with Sincere Roberts netting 11 points, four rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal. 
 
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday, November 17th as they host LSU-Eunice. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM at the Peter S. Marecek Physical Fitness Center.
