As the new basketball season approaches, excitement is in the air for both players and fans. This year our team has a dynamic mix of experienced returners, talented new transfers and promising freshman all ready to make their mark on the court. With a tough schedule ahead, the challenges will be significant, but the potential for greatness is even greater.
Diving deeper into what makes this season one to watch, let's begin with returning players. Up first is Britzeida Sanchez, a 5'3 guard from Rio Grande, TX. Britzeida's work ethic and dedication to the team has continued to help guide our freshman and show them the ropes both on and off the court. Next, we have Diane Lara, a guard from Laredo, TX who averaged 2.8RPG this past season and will be a key rebounder for the Cougars this 2024-2025 season. Nest is Tyra Thompson from the Alamo city, San Antonio, TX. We look forward to watching the 5'9 guard grow on and off the court as she always brings that competitive energy. Lastly, returning to the Ville, we have Treasure Upson, a 5'5 guard from Columbus, TX. From refining her skills to boosting her confidence, she has truly transformed her game. We are excited to see her bring this new energy and expertise to the court. Our returning sophomores serve as the backbone of this team, bringing some experience in the tough Region14 and leadership, and we look forward to seeing their growth.
We are thrilled to welcome our very own hometown icon, who has made her transfer journey back from Colorado to join the Cougars, Carrah Davis. Carrah's passion and connection to the community make her a perfect fit. Our other transfers include 5'9 guard Haiven Alvarado-Harris, who is transferring in from Wharton College where she rocked volleyball. Also, 5'3 guard Ciara Davis who travels from Palo Verde, a college in The Golden State, California. We take great pleasure in getting these athletes to come alongside, and we can't wait to see their impact on the court.
Introducing our dynamic freshman, eager to bring fresh energy and skills to the Cougar basketball team, we start with 5'5 guard A'Quarius Howard from Huntsville, TX. Next, we introduce Brelee Nichols from Huffman, TX, Kashiya Robinson from Edna, TX, and twins Jalissa King and Jaziel King from Richmond, TX. Two other players, one from the Alamo City and the other from Weslaco, TX, Myrakl Smith and Salma Saucedo join the squad and are both eager to get going. Lastly, we welcome Dual-sport athlete Krystal Jewell, who will be killing it on the volleyball court early on and will later join us on the basketball court come November.
Coach Nathan Purswell and assistant Josline Hernandez are thrilled to get this season started with new faces and talent eager to see what we can achieve together. The Cougars will face Western Gulf and Texas A&M San Antonio for a scrimmage early October, and the first official competition is set for South Plains College on November 1st.
