Coastal Bend Volleyball Wins Three Out of Four at Blinn Invitational

Beeville, TX—  The CBC Cougars Volleyball started off the weekend with a three set win over Dallas College-North Lake in their Friday morning match. The Cougars were able to put away the Blazers in three sets; 25-17, 25-19 and 25-8 to complete the sweep.

CBC Libero, Cierra Ovalle notched in a match-high, 23 Digs and team-high, four Service Aces. Cougar Setter, Leah Gonzales also recorded a match-high in Assists with 28. Coastal Bend Middle Blocker, Renata Dominguez lead the team with six Blocks and 15 Kills. Outside Hitter, Odalys Gonzalez recorded 11 Kills and nine digs for her performance.

For their final match of the day, CBC faced the College of Dupage. Coastal Bend was able to corral the Chapparals in four sets; 25-16, 25-21, 19-25, and 25-11. After dropping the third set, the Cougars rallied up to run away with the match.

Cierra Ovalle once again had a match-high in Digs with 21. Gonzales also displayed another match-high with 37 Assists while compiling 11 Digs. CBC Outside Hitter, Ysabella Hinojosa recorded 11 Digs during her performance versus the Chaps. Dominguez amassed 11 Kills while playing in all four sets. Odalys Gonzalez produced a match-high in Kills with 17 while also recording 12 Digs.

Saturday morning the Cougars faced the Cisco College Wranglers. The Cougars battled all match long but the Wranglers proved to be too much for the Cougars in the five set loss 26-2818-25, 25-20, 25-14, and 6-15. It was the only loss on weekend for the Cougars. The Cougars hung tough out-hitting the Pirates landing .152 of their chances, led by Odalys Gonzalez with 25 kills. CBC also played well on the defensive collecting more digs than Cisco 87 to 79. The cougars had five players with double figure digs led by Cierra Ovalle and Leah Gonzales with 16 apiece. But the Cougars were done by errors committing 23 attacking errors and 13 service errors.

In the final match of the invitational, Coastal Bend found themselves in a heated battle with a familiar foe. The Victoria College Pirates tested the Cougars as they pushed the match into five sets. CBC won the first set, 25-20 but dropped sets two and three; 18-25 and 22-25. The Cougars were forced to regroup and assemble a better approach. Coastal Bend won the fourth set, 25-21 while also taking the match, 15-11 in the fifth and final set. The Cougars were again led by a strong performance from Odalys Gonzalez, who had 28 kills, 22 digs and also 4 block assists. The Cougars also had three other players with double figure digs, Cierra Ovalle (17), Ysabella Hinojosa (17), and freshman Gabriel Theut (14). Madison Pike also contributed five block assists of her own.

 

Coastal Bend will face #3 Blinn College on Thursday, September 23rd in Brenham, Tx. The Match will be played at the Kruse Center and is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
