CBC Softball Splits in Abilene

Abilene, Tx- This past weekend, Coastal Bend College Softball competed in the Cisco College Softball Tournament. The Cougars would play four games in two days as they aimed to improve their 8-7 record.

On Friday, February 22nd, CBC Softball faced Cisco College for their first game of the tournament. Left Handed Pitcher, Amanda Aguirre would start in the circle for the Cougars. Aguirre went on to pitch a complete game, going seven strong innings, scattering five runs of seven hits. The lefty walked four batters while striking out five Wranglers.

CBC broke up the 0-0 tie in the Top of the First inning to take a one run lead. The Wranglers answered back with two runs of their own in the Bottom half of the First to claim the lead. In the Third inning, Cisco added to their one run lead, with two Wranglers crossing the plate. Coastal Bend cut into the 4-1 deficit in the Top of the Fifth inning when they scored two runs. The Wranglers would extend their 4-3 lead with another run in the Bottom half of the Fifth. The Cougars would not be denied, as they mounted three runs, to comeback and win the ball game in the Seventh inning by a final score of 6-5. Aguirre would be credited with the Win.

Coastal Bend Shortstop, Annette Cardenas went three for four at the plate, hitting two Home Runs and scoring three times. Right Fielder, Avery Hearn also went three for four on the game, collecting an RBI. Third Baseman, Emily Michki recorded an RBI during her time in the batter's box, going two for four. Designated Player, Madyson Parker hit a Double and a Triple to score two CBC runners.


For the second game of the day, Coastal Bend squared off against Region XIV foe, Tyler Junior College. LHP, Amanda Aguirre would receive the nod for CBC. Aguirre pitched six and two thirds of an inning, surrendering nine hits, four runs and three walks while striking out four batters.

The Cougars would strike first in the Top of the Second inning to open the game with a one run lead. After holding the Apaches to a scoreless frame in the Bottom of the Second inning, CBC would extend their lead to 2-0 in the Top of the Third. TJC would trim the 2-0 Coastal Bend lead in half, by scoring a run in the Bottom of the Third. Moving to the Bottom of the Fourth inning, the Apaches would tie the ball game at 2-2, with another run. 

Coastal Bend would not score again, as hits were difficult to come by. TJC went on to win the game in the Bottom of the Seventh, 2-4.

CBC Second Baseman, Kirstie Soto and Right Fielder, Avery Hearn each hit Solo Home Runs for the Cougars. Third Baseman, Emily Michki went one for three, knocking in a Double.


On Saturday, the Cougars would face a familiar opponent from recent weeks, in Midland College. CBC gave Kirstyn Gomez the ball to get the Cougars started in the pitching circle. Gomez would pitch a complete game, giving up five hits, four runs (one earned run), walking four batters and striking out six Chaparrals.

The Chaps took a one run lead in the Third inning, to break the 0-0 ball game. In the Bottom of the Third inning, Coastal Bend Shortstop, Annette Cardenas hit a two run Home Run to but the Cougars on top, 2-1. As the game would play out, CBC was not able to produce anymore runs through the remainder of the game. 

Leading 2-1, heading to the Top of the Seventh inning, Midland College would score three runs to reclaim the lead. The Cougar ended up falling 4-2 to the Chaparrals.

Third Baseman, Emily Michki went two for four on the game. Cardenas went one for three, penciling in two RBI's from her Home Run.


Coastal Bend would play against Ranger College for the fourth and final game of the Cisco College Softball Tournament. LHP, Amanda Aguirre would start for the Cougars. Aguirre would pitch a complete game, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned run) while walking a batter and striking out a Ranger. 

The Cougars broke the scoreless game in the Top of the Second inning by scoring two runs. CBC would add to their lead in the Top of the Fourth inning by scoring another run. 

Leading 3-0, as the game moved to the Bottom of the Fifth inning, the Rangers trimmed the gap by scoring two runs. In the Top of the Seventh inning, Coastal Bend would add some insurance with two runs to take a 5-2 lead. Aguirre and company would shut the door on Ranger College in the Bottom of the Seventh inning. The Cougars beat the Rangers by a final of 5-2.

Coastal Bend Shortstop, Annette Cardenas hit two Doubles during her four appearances at the dish. Second baseman, Kirstie Soto went one for three recording an RBI. Right Fielder, Avery Hearn also pencilled an RBI. Center Fielder, Madyson Parker went two for four at the plate collecting an RBI for the Cougars. First baseman, Ashley Soto also went two for four during her at bats while stating an RBI and a Double. Catcher, Brianna McKeel recorded an RBI during the game.


The Cougars split their games, with two wins and two losses. Coastal Bend currently holds a 10-9 record on the season. CBC next set of games will be in Longview, Tx as the Cougars will compete in the Region XIV Crossover Tournament on Friday, March 8th and Saturday, March 9th. Coastal Bend is scheduled to face Bossier Parish Community College at 12:00 PM for their first game.
