Cougars Dig The Long Ball; Sweep Lamar State

Port Arthur, Tx-  Earlier this week, Coastal Bend Softball and Lamar State College- Port Arthur agreed to bump up their scheduled Region XIV Conference double header due to upcoming rain in the forecast. Both clubs squared off on Thursday, March 28th in Port Arthur. 

Coastal Bend defeated the Lamar State Seahawks 10-7 on Thursday to take game one of the double header by completing a furious comeback late in the game. The Cougars were staring at the bad side of a 7-3 deficit as the came to the bat for the final time; what happened next was an absolute barrage of hits and homers.  Once the game was tied at seven, Madysen Parker homered on the first pitch of her at bat, scoring three Cougars.

Lamar State scored four runs in the fourth inning, but Coastal Bend still managed to pull out the victory.

Amanda Aguirre began the game in the pitcher's circle for Coastal Bend. The lefty allowed seven hits and seven runs over three and a third innings, striking out three. Kirstyn Gomez entered the game in the Bottom of the Fourth inning to relieve Aguirre. Gomez pitched three and two thirds of an inning for CBC, allowing only one hit and recording three strikeouts for her outing.

The Cougars launched four home runs for the game. Parker put one out in the seventh inning. CBC Shortstop, Annette Cardenas had a homer in the fifth and seventh innings. Third Baseman, Emily Michki had a long ball in the third inning.

Coastal Bend racked up 11 hits. Myla Longoria, Cardenas, Michki, and Ashley Soto each had multiple hits for the Cougars. Cardenas and Parker both recorded three RBI's for the game, while Michki scored two CBC runners. Brianna McKeel and Longoria each had an RBI for the Cougars. 


Coach Andrade and staff decided to start the second game with Kirstyn Gomez in the circle. 

The Cougars snatched the lead late in the game in a 10-9 victory over the Lamar State Seahawks on Thursday afternoon. CBC was able to get on the board in the Top of the First inning when Hearn singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. Gomez would pitch two and a third of an inning for CBC, surrendering seven hits and six earned runs for her outing. Lefty, Amanda Aguirre entered the game to relieve Gomez in the Bottom of the Third. 

As the game progressed, Coastal Bend scored six runs in the fourth inning. The Cougars tallied one home run during the game, Annette Cardenas had a long ball in the fourth inning.

Vanessa Garces, Emily Michki, Ashley Soto and Cardenas all had RBIs in the frame. Lamar State scored three runs in the fourth inning knotting up the game up at nine in the bottom of the inning. The ball game was tied at nine with Coastal Bend batting in the top of the fifth when Avery Hearn singled on a 1-0 count, scoring the game winning run. Aguirre and company held off the Seahawks, winning the ball game 10-9, completing the two game sweep.

Aguirre pitched four and two thirds of an inning for her performance, allowing three earned runs off six hits while striking out four batters. 

CBC Softball collected 15 hits on the day. Hearn, Garces, Madyson Parker, Cardenas, and Michki each managed multiple hits for Coastal Bend during the second game of the double header. Parker, Garces and Hearn each collected three hits to lead the Cougars. Coastal Bend didn't commit a single error in the field for the ball game.  The Cougars lead Region XIV - South in homers so far this season, with Cardenas Division leading 10 and Michki right on her heels with seven.

The Cougars improve to 20-15 on the season and move to 5-5 in Region XIV Conference play. Coastal Bend will be back in action on Friday, April 5th as they travel to Laredo, Tx for a conference double header with Laredo Community College. First Pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
